Odhikar Worries At Forced Disappearance

Odhikar, a Dhaka based human rights organization termed present law and order situation alarming through presenting various relevant data.    

According to the organization, the rate of deaths in custody and forced disappearing increased significantly in 2011.

Extrajudicial killing
At least 84 people lost their lives in extra-judicial killings in 2011 at the hand of members of law enforcement agencies, according to the human rights watchdog's annual report of 2011.

The number was 127 in 2010 and 154 in 2009, said the Dhaka-based rights watchdog.

Death in custody
The report on human rights situation in Bangladesh in 2011 said 140 people died in law enforcers' custody. The numbers was 109 in 2010 and 123 in 2009.

Forced disappearance
Thirty people were mysteriously 'disappeared' after they were held by perpetrators posed as member of law enforcement agencies last year. Sixteen people were abducted in 2010 and two was in 2009.



The report was formally disclosed at the Jatiya Press Club in the morning. Secretary of Odhikar Adilur Rahman Khan presented the report.


Border killing
31 innocent Bangladeshi people were killed by the BSF in 2011 while the number was 74 in 2010 and 96 and 62 in 2009, respectively.

Repression on women
Repression on women increased significantly across the country. The number of dowry-related violence shot up to 516 in 2011 from 319 in 2009 and 378 in 2010.

ZI Khan Panna, executive member of Bangladesh Bar Council, and Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, chief executive officer of Boishakhi Television, and Mizanur Rahman Khan, associate editor of Bangla daily Prothom Alo, were present at the programme.
